CARING FOR YOUR OUTDOOR PATIO FURNITURE

If you’ve invested in quality patio furniture, the team at All Things are Possible Ltd., warns that you should be advised that chilly winds, snow, ice, and rain can put your chairs, tables, benches and storage boxes at risk. We’ve got some useful steps so you can get more enjoyment once Spring arrives.

Alberta winters can be extremely harsh on metal, plastic, wood and stone, especially the last one we just experienced in 2017-2018. Piles of snow, ice, and repetitive thawing and freezing from Chinooks can lead to water settling into and onto surfaces and crannies. When the water refreezes, it can expand and crack fibres, joints, plastic and cushions.

If you can make some space in your home or garage to store your furniture, make the move to do so. This will protect your furniture from the elements, and at least, maintain a regular temperature (even in an uninsulated garage). If your deck is high enough, store some of your items underneath, but ensure they are covered.

You can also cover your outdoor furniture with quality tarp or thick rubberized plastic, ensuring to have enough hanging over the side to tie it tightly around the legs to prevent snow from accumulating underneath. Keep an eye on the moisture underneath during thawing times to ensure water isn’t pooling on the furniture, which can lead to discolouration to woods as well as mold.

Cushions and pillows can handle staying outside, as long as they are covered. Acrylic blend covers are designed to breathe during winter, and will protect the inner material.

Teak is popular for garden furniture and loungers, mostly because it has a long-lasting strength due to the natural oils that dwell within. Instead of covering this tough wood with plastic, use a breathable cover. Cedar is designed to withstand all types of weather, but regular treatment and repair will help keep it healthy and safe when stepping out on to the patio or sitting on furniture.

And lastly, iron tables and chairs can also be vulnerable to moisture from excessive snow, ice and rain. If you can, store them in a dry space to protect the surface.  The extra steps you take after you’ve enjoyed your summer furniture will mean you’ll save money, time and trouble in every season.
